Gold Coast: Hingis, Garbin, Safina, Peer remain

I’m usually not very interested in posting scores you can easily find on sports sites, but I think I need some positive news after all of these Aus Open withdrawls (with more to come, since Myskina hasn’t confirmed, even though she is back in Russia now).

Top-seeded Martina Hingis advanced to the Australian Women’s Hardcourt Championships semifinals Thursday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Catalina Castano of Colombia.

Hingis, who used this tournament last year to launch her comeback after three years off the tour, will play Italian Tathiana Garbin in the final four. Garbin beat Elena Vesnina of Russia 7-5, 6-2.

Second-seeded Russian Dinara Safina, sister of former top-ranked men’s player Marat Safin, defeated Australia’s Samantha Stosur 7-6 (4), 6-3 at Royal Pines to advance to the other semifinal against Israel’s Shahar Peer, who beat fellow teenager Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Fox Sports
