Sharapova poised to gain from Henin’s loss

I guess we’re supposed to care what Maria thinks, but as #2 in the world, she has a lot to gain from Henin’s no-show (look at that, I’ve already quit tacking on “Hardenne” at the end of her name!) - I expect Maria to do very well in the Australian Open, as usual - she’s a solid player, and has an excellent chance to advance to the finals. Personally, I’m still not her biggest fan, but I do expect her to get a big rankings lead in the next few weeks. What an opportunity.

Justine Henin-Hardenne’s decision to withdraw from the Australian Open due to ‘personal family reasons’ has been met with mixed reaction from world number two Maria Sharapova.

‘It is very unfortunate for her and you always want to be playing against the top players,’ said Sharapova.

‘You always want to compete against the best players but you can’t expect everyone to play in every grand slam.’ icWales
