Time for Jankovic to show her stuff

Top seed Jelena Jankovic and fifth seed Vera Zvonareva took contrasting routes yesterday before booking their berths in today’s final of the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland.

Jankovic, from Serbia, was on court for just 15 minutes before unseeded Frenchwoman Camille Pin, down 0-3 in the opening set, retired with a thigh injury.

Zvonareva – whose quarter-final opponent yesterday, French qualifier Virginie Razzano, also retired with injury – did have to play out her match this afternoon.

The Russian’s more penetrative ground strokes were a key to her 6-3 7-5 win over unseeded American Jill Craybas, who was not helped by a high number of unforced errors. The Press

Two comments here: first, there’s that Craybas again! She sure sneaks into the later stages of tournaments a lot more than she gets credit for - granted this isn’t a Williams sister being ousted from Wimbledon, but she sure can be dangerous. Second, Jankovic needs to get in gear for this year. I know she has been working on lots of stuff in addition to tennis in years past - school, etc - but if she is going to be a real threat, she can’t wait much longer than this year to get her mind and body into the game.
