Nadal disappoints in Chennai

Rafa Nadal nearly handed the title on the Chennai Open to Youzhny. Youzhny won 6-0, 6-1. Here are Nadal’s comments.

“Maybe I was a bit tired after the long semi-final, but I lost the final because Michael played very well,” said Nadal, asserting that he never made excuses for losing.

Nadal even took a medical time-out during the second set, but said he faced no fitness problem. “I had no injury, just wanted the trainer’s help in overcoming tiredness.” The Herald

As much as I like Nadal, I think he may have some exploitable weaknesses when it comes to stamina. Granted, few players are match ready now, but being able to come through to clinch a title is really key. I hope he and his handlers plan his schedule well this year - Federer seems to have that aspect of pro tennis down to a science.

And none of this is to take away from Youzhny - he deserves full credit for demolishing the #2 player in the world.
