AO: Moya eliminated by Koubek

Another upset, and we still have one more to report on. I’ll put together some photos I have of Moya since we won’t get to see him much.

Austrian Stefan Koubek has upset sixteenth seed Carlos Moya in a tight slog 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (7-2) 7-5 6-4 on Margaret Court Arena tonight.

Moya dictated play early on but failed to capitalise with the conservative Koubek claiming the first set in a tie-break.

Neither players’ serve proved a major weapon though surprisingly, there were very few breaks of serve in a see-sawing contest.

After conceding the third set Koubek regained his composure to win the fourth 7-5.

Koubek began to grow in confidence and go for his shots in the deciding set and it paid off as he broke Moya in the final game of the match to clinch victory.

Moya joins the casualty list with fellow seeds Juan Ignacio Chela (18) and Andy Murray (9) meanwhile, Koubek will meet Agustin Calleri in the second round. AO
