Guccione can’t keep momentum going

I bet quite a few people thought that Guccione may have a better showing based on his warm-up event performance, but he’s already out in the first round.

Korean Hyung-Taik Lee has triumphed over Chris Guccione in the first round of Australian Open 2008 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 6-4.

The atmosphere was electric at Margaret Court Arena, as Australian and Korean fans vied to be heard over each other’s spirited cheers.

The two opponents were evenly matched throughout the first set, with neither able to get a break of serve, or even a break point. Guccione took a stranglehold of the tie-breaker, and had three set points. But the Korean battled back bravely to win four consecutive points, and take the set and all the momentum.

He broke Guccione with his only opportunity in the second set, wrapping that up in just 28 minutes. Guccione was immediately under pressure in the third, dropping his service early. Despite enjoying his home-crowd advantage, Guccione struggled to find any weakness in Lee’s service and bowed out. AO
