Venus wins opening match
Eighth seed Venus Williams has won her opening game of the tournament in straight sets downing the gritty Zi Yan of China 6-2 7-5.
Williams took the first set with ease 6-2, but it was her over-sized diamond earrings and fetching purple outfit that stole the show.
It was a different story in the second though, with Yan breaking Williams in the opening game of the second set.
Venus managed to break back in the fourth game but was at times troubled by the athletic Yan, who refused to stop running.
Williams’ 29 unforced errors to Yan’s 22 may be cause for concern and she will need to improve on that if she wants to advance deep into the tournament.
Williams will meet Frenchwoman Camille Pin in the second round on Thursday. AO
