Golovin is another upset victim

Aravane Rezai pulled off a shock at the Australian Open on Wednesday as she dumped out 13th seed Tatiana Golovin.

In an all-French battle, Rezai emerged a 6-3 3-6 6-3 winner on Court Three at Melbourne Park.

The tightness of the match was reflected in the match statistics which showed Rezai edged the winner count 35-31, while there were 31 unforced errors from Golovin, just one more than her compatriot.

Rezai, who overcame a ranking gap of 56 places, struggled to complete victory but finally did so after an hour and 45 minutes on court.

She will next face Su-Wei Hsieh for a place in the last 16, after the Chinese Taipei player also caused an upset by thrashing 19th seed Sybille Bammer 6-2 6-0. Sporting Life
