Philippoussis out of Wimby

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Don’t fret, he’s still on tv…

Former finalist Mark Philippoussis has ruled himself out of another run at Wimbledon next month.

The 30-year-old Australian has not played a tournament since suffering a knee injury at the Hopman Cup in December that required surgery for a fourth time.

Philippoussis announced he was postponing his comeback until July on the advice of his trainer Gil Reyes.

“He is only at about 95 per cent fitness and Gil didn’t want him coming back anything short of 100 per cent fit,” said Philippoussis’ manager Rob Aivatoglou in a statement.

Seriously. He doesn’t even remotely have a body like that.

Jankovic out of PacLife also

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Looks like Na Li took out Jankovic, going by the scoreboard - 6-3, 7-6. I haven’t read the interviews yet, so I’ll add more when I get to them. This tournament is just not a good one for some of the top seeds so far.

Sharapova falls out of #1 and Indian Wells

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Not a surprise since she hasn’t been doing well in the tournament…

Defending champion Maria Sharapova was knocked out of the Pacific Life Open on Tuesday, a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 loss to Vera Zvonareva that will cost her the No. 1 ranking.

Sharapova was beaten in the fourth round and needed to reach the Indian Wells semifinals to remain No. 1. She will be supplanted by Justine Henin when the rankings are released Monday. Henin, who is not at this tournament, won two recent events in the Middle East.

The 19-year-old Sharapova was playing her first event since withdrawing from her semifinal at Tokyo last month with a strained left hamstring.

She struggled in a match between Russians. Zvonareva, ranked No. 20, won for third time in seven matches against Sharapova. ESPN

Henman out of Tennis Channel Open

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Tim Henman failed to progress to the quarter-finals of the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas after falling to a 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 4-6 defeat at the hands of Feliciano Lopez.

Henman struggled to make any inroads on Lopez’s serve in the match and slumped to defeat despite taking the opening set with a dominant showing in the tie-break.

Third seed Marat Safin won through with a 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 win over Igor Kunitsyn, while Lleyton Hewitt beat Thomas Johansson 4-6 7-5 6-2. icWales

Holy cow.

So much has been going on at the AO - and I’ve been on international flights and getting used to a new time zone and generally spaced out. I’ll be going through the old news first…

Henin finishes #1

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Well, I am finally back from Italy (non-tennis vacation) so I can start catching up on the close of this year’s tennis season. I really didn’t think Sharapova could possibly lose out on nabbing the #1 spot this year, but Henin sure fought to take the chance from her.

Anyway, more to come once I get caught up with work, school, etc… :)
