Photo: Federer’s Nike cardigan

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Now that Roger has won his first round match, we’ve been able to confirm that the Nike cardigan is part of the outfit this year. In my opinion, Nike so far has yet to show anything interesting for the 2008 Wimbledon event.

Sharapova will wear shorts at Wimbledon

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

No fancy dress as expected, apparently…

Sharapova, who once wore diamond-encrusted shoes at Wimbledon, is keeping her style simple at this year’s championships - she’ll be wearing shorts. “I’m going with the traditional shorts,” she said. “I’ve never worn shorts at a Grand Slam. I’m gonna be debuting that. Call it menswear, obviously. It’s kind of like a tuxedo look, very simple lines, classic.” DNA India

Top Spin 3 releases next week

Friday, June 20th, 2008

While the video game Top Spin 3 is releasing on several consoles next week (such as Xbox 360 and PS3), I have had the Wii version on pre-order for months. Amazon altered the release date between June 23 and 24th, so I am not sure exactly which day I’ll have it in my hands, but expect a review of the Wii game play and how well the Wii controllers suit the game.

Created by 2K’s Paris studio, PAM Development, Top Spin 3 immerses players in a visually and physically realistic tennis experience. The intuitive pick-up-and-play action in Top Spin Tennis allows gamers to use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers in a way that matches the movements players would make on a real tennis court. The Nunchuk controls the player and aim, while the vibration-enabled Wii Remote hits the ball like a tennis racquet and determines the style of shot ranging from a top spin move to a slice. The Wii Remote also allows players to control the power and the quality of the shot and to serve in many different ways. GameCrazy

Andy Roddick is engaged

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

I’m in Malaysia for business (photos), so my posting hasn’t been nearly as often as I’d like - and I’m missing my favorite tournament!

Andy Roddick won at love — he is engaged to swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker.

The 25-year-old tennis star met Decker in New York last year and proposed to her in early March, his Web site said Monday.

“With their hectic travel schedules, Andy and Brooklyn plan to enjoy their engagement and will wait to set a wedding date,” the site said. MSNBC

Players requests: behind the scenes at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008
World No. 1 Justine Henin isn’t crazy about the humidity, wind and traffic in South Florida. But she apparently does like rice milk. The Sony Ericsson Open, which starts today, is paying people to make sure it shows up in her hotel refrigerator.

Men’s No. 1 Roger Federer wants golf reservations for his parents. Done.

Defending champion Serena Williams needs a room with a kitchen. Check.

Andy Roddick likes NBA tickets but sometimes switches hotel reservations two or three times before the tournament starts. Covered.

Henin, a finalist last year in Key Biscayne for the first time, did not mention rice milk when asked what she liked and didn’t like about this competition. She did say she is finding Key Biscayne a little more to her taste over time. Three times since 2001 she has lost her first or second match.

“I like Miami, but I am not a big fan of the tournament - although I like it better since last year,” Henin said. “It is a big tournament, and they do a lot to make it a big event and it is like the fifth grand slam.”

The tournament spends an estimated $500,000 to $800,000 annually on what might be called player amenities, little touches to nudge player opinion upward. This year, for example, it will buy about 150 Miami Heat tickets and provide them free to players. In some cases, it works out deals with sponsors. All players get a free rental car for the duration, and the top 10 tool around in a Mercedes.

Evidently, it pays off. The 12-day event has been voted the tournament of the year five straight times by the men’s tour. The women’s tour named it the top event in 2004. Palm Beach Post
